There's a lot of discussion about Wish out there. I haven't played with it before but had a helluva treasure hit, and someone now has a ring of three wishes. They used it to bring a dead PC back. But what kind of house rules do you have for Wish? what scope of wishes do you permit in your games?
Context: I just had a major disaster in the game. 2 PCs and 2 Henchmen dead, consumed by demon fire, so no Raise Dead. I think they might just roll new characters, but they do have the ring. They might want to turn back time or something. is that within the scope of the spell?
After a month hiatus, we finally got back to the table: - the party used two wishes 1. removed the dragon. they asked for it to be their slave and friend and to be good, and a Monadic Deva showed up to tell them to aim a little lower. So a deal was struck and Smargandine was summoned to the lap of Tiamat in Avernus. Now the Cults of Tiamat, and an Ancient White Wyrm have the names of the party and their general location....tbd what happens, but for now the team is ready to slay some frogs. 2. But as with all things, I've now opened the door to trouble - they used a second wish to wish the Moon Giant who rules the Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun to be eliminated as well. Two big bads in one day - dang. But no good idea goes unpunished. with the moon giant gone, the hill giants and trolls and the norker shaman begin quarelling and some leave with the moon giant's horde. Less treasure - but still plenty of good exploration and discovery in the Cyst and the dungeon if they so choose.
The Extraplanar backlash may be sufficient to make them choose carefully in how they use wishes in the future, but a good time was had by all.
My players are contemplating using a Wish to kill a certain dragon they've encountered and run away from.
I'll have to honor the request and then have Tiamat take her very personal revenge.
FWIW, I definitely allow PCs to use wishes to raise dead in various fashions, such as by rewinding time to cancel events/encounters, to bring back the slain without loss of CON (if the wish is worded well), to bring back multiple slain PCs, etc.
In general, I don't actively try to crock wishes, and will often (as I do with some of the more-powerful divination magics) ask the players their intent, in addition to taking their wording into account in how the wish is fulfilled.
